Apush Essay -- in What Ways and to What Extent Was...

In the early 1800s, America changed in a lot of ways in a short amount of time. The change that occurred was, for the most part, the result of the industrial development. The industrial advancements in the early 1800s had a huge amount of consequences, both positive and negative. But the industrial development from 1800 to 1860 affected the North and the South in hugely different ways. The prominent differences eventually caused an amazing amount of tension between the two regions as they moved in completely separate directions. Mainly, the North and the South differentiated when it came to cultures, economies, and political views. With the dawn of the 19th century, there were three revolutions that completely altered the United States.†¦show more content†¦Though the majority of Southerners didn’t own slaves, slaves were used in the South to keep the revenue up, and slavery was very much a part of the agricultural lifestyle. Political tension between the North and th e South started early when there was disagreement over Henry Clay’s American System. The American System imposed tariffs to support northern manufacturing, federally funded roads and canals, and supported the National Bank. Northerners were in support of the American System but the South wasn’t on board with the plan. This protective tariff was a tax on imports, and since the South was receiving most of the imported goods, they got the brunt of the tariff. The South believed it was unfair that it was putting money into the North’s industrial economy when the South was barely making enough revenue to support itself. While the South provided the Northern industries with most of the raw materials they needed, the price the North paid for these things were nothing compared to what the South had to pay for the manufactured goods the North produced. The opposition to the American System was so strong that South Carolina declared the tariffs void and threatened to leav e the Union. But Andrew Jackson worked with South Carolina and the Union remained whole. This was the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The two regions clashed politically too. While the North became generally

The Light On Daisys Dock - 1263 Words

In the literary criticism How to Read Novels Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, Foster underscores the notion of character’s desires. In the literary criticism of chapter fourteen of The Light on Daisy’s Dock, Foster says that not only is the novel is driven by character’s desires but also character’s desires are often associated with symbols and conflicts. These symbols and conflicts guide readers in a significant way which readers will understand the message the author is conveying in the novel. Therefore, Foster’s concept of character’s desires along with symbols is applied in â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been† and â€Å"Sonny’s Blues.† In The Light on Daisy’s Dock, Foster elucidate his concept of character’s desires and†¦show more content†¦Therefore, the author of this novel is conveying the message of the desires soon leading to the downfall of characters. While Connie walks with Eddie to his car, Connie first notice Friend, who â€Å"was a boy with shaggy black hair, in a convertible jalopy painted gold† (Oates, 15). The significance of gold is associated with compassion because the color of gold is yellow which is the symbol for happiness. The symbol of the color of the car is applied when Arnold Friend confronts his love for Connie by asking her to go on a quest with him in his car. In other words, Friend’s desire of taking Connie into his car becomes the main plot of the story. When Connie saw the â€Å"open jalopy, painted a bright gold that caught the sunlight opaquely[,] her heart began to pound and her fingers snatched at her hair, checking it, and...wondering how bad she looked† (Oates, 17). Comparison and Analysis of the use of Camerawork in Friends and The Office Free Essays

The Office has a â€Å"docusoap† format, this is supported by ingenious camerawork, shots are often shaky, and frames are crowded. The raw documentary style is engrossing, the camera often moves with uncertainty as if it is not known what will happen next. The camera often pans quickly and unsteadily in order to obtain reaction shots. We will write a custom essay sample on Comparison and Analysis of the use of Camerawork in Friends and The Office or any similar topic only for you Order Now There is little consideration to position of elements within the frame, this all adds to the raw docusoap style. Zooming is often done shakily in order to catch reactions. The Office is made up of many two shots and the camerawork is unsteady, also characters often slightly slip out of frame momentarily and the camera must quickly adjust when this character becomes active. Friends is found in stark contrast to the office, it optimises exceptional quality camerawork. Many medium close shots are to be found, with all characters held neatly within the frame. The group shots are framed perfectly with all elements positioned appropriately. Everything is more calm and neat hich demonstrates the high quality of the programme. Editing Firstly the title sequence of The Office has several cross-fades to set the location of Slough. The edit technique used most frequently is the cut, often to catch reactions it also maintains a pace to the episode. Commonly an establishing pan-shot around the office is used before turning focus to a particular interaction between characters. Friends however optimises the cross-fade for transition between establishing hots of city buildings and actual shots of characters. All edit points are dealt with smoothly, little snippets of music often signify a change of scene and add to the general flow of the episode. Application of the Above When Gareth is in the â€Å"Invetigation Office† talking to Glen, the camera shot is really unsteady and is through a set of blinds, this gives the feel that you shouldn’t be watching this happening, it zooms in beyond the blinds to see reactions but always zooms back out to remind you of the blinds being a barrier. Key Relationships Between Bank of America and Wells Fargo free essay sample

While both banks use organizational control techniques, their financial statements clearly indicate that each bank wishes to discuss a specific type of organizational control used by their company. To better understand the similarities and differences in how Bank of America and Wells Fargo choose to operate; an in-depth look at three specific topics is necessary. A four part review of the inter-relationships of the data provided in the statements from both banks will provide a better understanding of how they compare. The first inter-relationship of data that can be viewed from these two banks is their statement of cash flows. While Bank of America and Wells Fargo’s statements of cash flows are not identical, the statements have three similarities. The similarities are operating activities, investing activities, and financing activities (Bank of America, 2007) (Wells Fargo Company, 2007). These three activities have similar subdivisions, however; the amounts that correlate with those subdivisions differ greatly between the banks. We will write a custom essay sample on Key Relationships Between Bank of America and Wells Fargo or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The second inter-relationship of data that can be viewed from these two banks is their statement of income. While Bank of America and Wells Fargos statements of income are not identical, they are similar. These similarities are interest income, interest expense, net interest income, non-interest income, and non-interest expense (Bank of America, 2007) (Wells Fargo Company, 2007). Once again these activities have similar subdivisions with strong variations in the amounts that correlate within the subdivisions. The third inter-relationship of data that can be viewed from these two banks is the statement of changes and shareholders equity. A common factor among both statements is the release of the balance as of December 31 year after year (Bank of America, 2007) (Wells Fargo Company, 2007). The fourth inter-relationship of data that can be viewed from these two banks also has strong ties to the basic accounting equation. The key components of the basic accounting equation that are illustrated in Bank of America’s and Wells Fargos financial statements are found in the balance sheet. The balance sheets are broken into the three main sections of assets, liabilities, and stockholders equity. The subdivisions under each of these sections are as similar as they are different. Some of the similarities are such things as cash, goodwill and other assets, while the dissimilarities can range depending on the type of business that the bank chooses to do (Bank of America, 2007) (Wells Fargo Company, 2007). In keeping with the basic accounting equation, the total shareholder equity plus total liabilities equals total assets. The next key financial relationships between Bank of America and Wells Fargo are each companys control techniques described in their financial statements. To understand what is described in their financial statements one must first understand what organizational control techniques are. Control techniques empower managers with the amount and type of information needed to monitor and measure performance (Albrecht, S. , Stice, J. , Stice, E. , and Swain, M. , 2005). Bank of America’s financial statements discuss that after their organization has strategies in place to reach its goals, funding is allocated to support the necessary resources and labor. As money is spent statements are updated to reflect the accounts affected by the spending. Managers use these financial statements, such as an income statement or balance sheet, to check the progress of plans and programs. Management uses the information provided by financial statements to monitor financial resources and activities. The income statement shows the results of the organizations operations over a specific period, such as revenues, expenses, and profit or loss. The balance sheet shows what the organization is worth (assets) at a particular point and the extent to which those assets were financed through debt (liabilities) or owners investment (equity) (Bank of America, 2007). Wells Fargos financial statements discusses financial audits, or formal investigations, that are regularly performed to ensure that the organization’s financial management procedures follow generally accepted procedures, policies, laws, and ethical guidelines. Audits may be conducted internally or externally. Wells Fargo goes into even more detail and discusses their financial ratio analysis that examines the relationship between specific figures on the financial statements and helps explain the significance of those figures. Liquidity ratios measure an organizations ability to generate cash. Profitability ratios measure an organizations ability to generate profits. Debt ratios measure an organizations ability to pay its debts. Activity ratios measure an organizations efficiency in operations and use of assets. In addition to this, financial responsibility centers require managers to account for a units progress toward financial goals within the scope of their influences. A managers goals and responsibilities may focus on unit profits, costs, revenues, or investments (Wells Fargo Company, 2007). In conclusion, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are separate banks, however; both of these institutions share many similarities when reporting their financial statements. The inter-relationships of the data provided in the statements seem to exemplify the correlation of accounting practices between these two banks.

Intrusive Misuse of Colons

Intrusive Misuse of Colons Intrusive Misuse of Colons Intrusive Misuse of Colons By Mark Nichol Writers often mistakenly introduce intrusive â€Å"colonization† where it is not necessarily. In each of the following examples, as explained in the discussion, the colon is superfluous. 1. Smith was invited to give the presentation: â€Å"Global Development and Global Practices.† â€Å"The presentation† and the title of the presentation are appositive- one is equivalent to the other, just as in â€Å"global-development expert John Smith,† the person’s description and his name are appositive- and no intervening punctuation is necessary: â€Å"Smith was invited to give the presentation â€Å"Global Development and Global Practices.† (If the presentation previously was alluded to and is now being specified, set the title off from the first part of the sentence with a comma: â€Å"Smith was invited to give the presentation, â€Å"Global Development and Global Practices,† but otherwise do not replace the colon with a comma. Also, if the wording is â€Å"Smith was invited to give a presentation on the topic of . . .,† the description of the topic is just that- a description- and should be lowercase and not enclosed in quotation marks. 2. An effective compliance program will include: governance and management oversight, policies and procedures, training, monitoring, quality control, and independent audit. When include or includes (or â€Å"consist/consists of† or a similar word) precedes a list, a colon is superfluous, just as it would be between any verb and any single noun or noun phrase associated with the verb. This is true whether the information is presented as an in-line list (meaning that it is integrated into the sentence, as here) or it is formatted vertically, one item on a line, whether as is or set off with bullets or numbers: â€Å"An effective compliance program will include governance and management oversight, policies and procedures, training, monitoring, quality control, and independent audit.† (An exception is if what precedes the list is an independent clause, such as â€Å"An effective compliance program will include the following.†) 3. Management is secure in the knowledge that it: has considered all plausible scenarios, understands the organization’s breakpoint in the event of extreme scenarios, and has effective contingency-response plans in place. The point of the previous example is true regardless of whether a verb precedes the colon or, because each item in the in-line or vertical list begins with a verb, the colon follows a word representing another part of speech; the fact that a sentence is more extensive and complex than if it had essentially a one-item list (for example, â€Å"Management is secure in the knowledge that it has considered all plausible scenarios†) is irrelevant: â€Å"Management is secure in the knowledge that it has considered all plausible scenarios, understands the organization’s breakpoint in the event of extreme scenarios, and has effective contingency-response plans in place.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? 7 Signs You Nailed Your Interview Even if It Doesnt Feel Like It

7 Signs You Nailed Your Interview Even if It Doesnt Feel Like It If you walk out of your interview and aren’t 100% sure you nailed it (or bombed it), you might spend the next few days stewing about how it went. But you don’t have to agonize in the dark. It is possible to tell more or less how you’ll fare- even between the extremes of horrible and perfectly. Here are some telltale signs that it went well- so well that you might even get the job! 1. Your interviewer  had a good time. You genuinely got the impression that your interviewer was having a good time during the conversation. You ran over your allotted time. And beyond that, their body language suggested as much, as well. They were smiling, nodding, leaning in, and making eye contact. And the smile was genuine- with engagement of the eyes and everything.2. You got a tour.Did your interviewer, after your conversation, show you around the office before showing you out? This is a good indicator that they’re seriously considering you. Bonus points if they introduced you to any members of your would-be team.3. You felt like they were selling you.Your interviewer made a point of trying to sell you on the company- they didn’t just watch you do backflips to try  to prove your worth. For example,  if they spend a lot of time talking about company policies, benefits, and perks and pay, you’re probably golden.4. They asked for references.Typically, hiring managers don’t bother asking for references they aren’t going to bother calling. If you’re asked for yours, that’s a good sign and usually means they plan on contacting your recommenders. Bonus points if they also mention they’ll be running a background check; these are expensive and they don’t run them willy nilly.5. There was a lingering goodbye.Did it seem like your interviewer, when walking you out, didn’t quite want you to leave? Did she stick around loitering in the lobby with you making idle conversation? These are signs of ho w comfortable she feels with you- as if you’re already a colleague, not a candidate.6. Follow-up is made explicit.Instead of a vague not to â€Å"being in touch,† the follow-up process is discussed with particulars. They ask about your timeline and interview status. They make references to the next steps, and not just in a generic way. Maybe they let you know exactly when to expect to hear from them†¦ and ask how best you can be reached.7. You get called back in for another round.Only finalists make the second round of interviews. Congrats, you’re on your way! Now you just have to do the whole thing over again. Show up, dress nicely, sparkle, and be engaging and confident without being arrogant or smug. Remember to send a handwritten thank you note for that interview, as well. Repeat all the good things you did for round one, and hopefully you’ll have that same good gut feeling after. That’s usually another good sign that you just might land t he job.

An Overall Analysis of Various Aspects of Islam Research Paper

An Overall Analysis of Various Aspects of Islam - Research Paper Example (Waines 92) This ambiguity of the meaning of Islam ultimately evolves from the concept that one’s submission to the will of God will bring peace in this worldly life. A fundamental Muslim thinks that submission to God and peace are the two sides of the same coin. Conventionally it is often believed that Islam was founded by Muhammad, in the 640 AD, who claimed himself to be the messenger of God. But referring to the Quranic evidences, some scholars claim that the origin of Islam dates back to Adam, the first man as well as the first prophet of Islam. This is how, all of the Abrahamic religions and few others were the ancient versions, of Islam, which have now been annulled by God Himself. (Nasr 45) But other scholars argue that since the ancient versions of Islam such Christianity (the religion of Prophet Zesu, one of the most revered prophets in Islam), Judaism (the religion of Prophet Moses, another revered prophet in Islam) and other religions have been repealed by God beca use the distortions of these religions by men, the true Islam for modern people is the one that Muhammad founded in the Seventh Century. Articles of Faith in Islam Institutional Islam, to a great extent, can be viewed as the summation of some seven beliefs and actions according to these beliefs. A follower of Muhammad or a believer of Islam needs to believes in: a. one God (Allah), b. prophets starting from Adam to Muhammad including Noah, Moses, Jesus, Abraham, etc. c. divine scriptures (Qutub) such as the Torah (the divine message of David or Da’ud), the Zabur (the divine message of Moses or Musa), the Bible of Zesu or Isaac (the Ingile as the Muslim calls it), the Quran (Muhammad), other unnamed minor religious scripts that were descended upon the prophets, d. the angels as the servants of God, e. belief in the â€Å"Day of Judgment† () and f. belief in fate. The summation of these beliefs is known as Islamic Belief, in Arabic ‘Iman’ or ‘Aqidahâ⠂¬â„¢. ‘Iman’ or ‘Aqidah’ essentially means to have beliefs in these six articles. Indeed five of these Articles of Faiths are supported by the textual evidences from the Quran. For an example, the verse 136 of chapter â€Å"An-Nisa† says, â€Å"Whoever disbelieveth in God and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers and the Last Day, he verily wandered far astray.† (4:136) Again the verse 285 of Chapter ‘Baqarah’ tells about the four of the main articles of faith in Islam: â€Å"believers have believed in God and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers† (2:285). Tawhid: Islamic Belief in the Oneness of God Islamic belief in God is both confirmation of one’s belief in one God and denial of many. In this sense, belief in Islamic God is a rigorous monotheism. In Arabic, this monotheism is called Tawhid or the oneness of God. This ‘Tawhid’ is the most fundamental concept of Islam. Indeed th e Islamic belief in the existence of one God is essentially the denial of many gods. According to the Quran, the fact that God is one is self-evident and therefore, the concept of many gods is simply false. God as well as His oneness, in Islam, often sides with transcendentalism. Though the transcendentalism has not directly been affirmed in Islam. The description of God, in a round about way, infers that God is transcendental. The Chapter, â€Å"
